Located on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. With an area of 6.7 square kilometres, the territory’s landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar. The territory is home to around 34,000 people, and shares its northern border with Spain. Historically, Gibraltar has occupied a very dominant position, overlooking the entrance and exit to the Mediterranean Sea. This position remains important, with half of the world’s seaborne trade passing through the Strait of Gibraltar.
Whilst Gibraltar’s contribution to higher education is still relatively young, with the first and only university founded in 2015, the aim of the University of Gibraltar is to build professional skills, as well as adding to Gibraltarian identity and history. There is also a focus on the future economic, social and sustainable development of Gibraltar.
International students from outside the EEA will need a visa to enrol at university in Gibraltar, and it’s recommended to apply for a multiple-entry Schengen visa for travel within the EU. Applications can be advised by the University of Gibraltar or through the nearest British Embassy.

The official language of Gibraltar is English. Other recognised languages include Spanish, Andalusian and Llanito. You will also hear other languages spoken, such as Berber, Arabic, Hindi, Sindhi and Maltese.
Courses delivered in Gibraltar will be taught in English, unless otherwise specified. If your first language is not English, it is likely that you will have to provide evidence of your English language proficiency as part of your application process. If you do not meet the required standards, you might be able to take an English language course to help you improve.
If your native language is not English, you should make the most of your opportunity to learn a language as you study. Communicating with locals and other students is the perfect way to practice. Having advanced ability in English is a great skill to add to your CV/resume.
