Central to all years of study are design modules that provide the framework to explore real and imagined projects. These projects are commercially based in urban environments. Underpinning the projects are the theoretical, historical, technical and essential skills required to enable designers to work in an informed and professional manner. Central to the course is the driving philosophy of the importance that creativity and idea generation play in design.
Virtually all teaching takes place in a modern studio environment. Students are encouraged to direct their studies and tailor their skills to marry their creative and professional ambitions through the use of seminars, presentations, tutorials and continual critique feedback.
In Year One basic skills and knowledge are introduced in a range of lively and experimental projects focused on drawing, modelling, design concepts and principles to help understand aspects of interior design such as planning, colour, space, structure and surface.
In Year Two projects focus on particular areas of design practice such as retail, theatre, exhibition and building reuse. Advanced drawing and modelling skills, understanding materials, construction and detail are all developed to enable experimentation, creativity and practicality. This is support by knowledge of theoretical and historical perspectives in contemporary interior design.
In Year Three students explore future contexts for design and develop a realistic Final Project in depth. Students focus on career ambitions and develop a professional quality portfolio of work in preparation for entering the design industry or associated areas of practice.
