About Business - Research, MPhil - at University of Greenwich

A Master of Philosophy (MPhil) with possibility to transfer to a Doctor of Philosophy(PhD) involves the systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body ofstate-of-the-art knowledge in your chosen academic disciplinary field or area ofprofessional practice, in business or economics; and the creation of new knowledge, through original research and advanced scholarship, to extend the forefront of thatdisciplinary field or area of practice.

It also provides you with the general ability toconceptualise, design and realise a project for the generation of new knowledge, and adeep understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academicenquiry. The MPhil/PhD programme guides you to achieve these goals. Unlike taughtprogrammes (such as bachelor's and master's programmes), it provides a more criticaland rigorous exploration of your particular subject area, and places much moreemphasis on original research and the contribution to knowledge. The award isessentially based on the thesis; taught courses, to be taken in the first year, lay thefoundation from which you will develop advanced research skills including data gathering, analysis and presentation.

The normal route accepted by the University is to register first as MPhil student, and transfer to PhD after demonstrating sufficient progress in the research (usually afterabout 12-18 months from start). At the heart of the MPhil/PhD programme is thelearning contract between the student and the research supervisors. The supervisorsare experts in your chosen area and will guide you through the process of: defining theaims of your research project, and its expected deliverables; outlining a suitable plan ofwork, monitoring its realisation, and helping you to keep your commitment to it; guidingyou to obtaining ethical approval to realise your research, if your study requires it;identifying any further taught courses and training events (in addition to mandatoryones) to be attended in support of your research project. The supervisors are also yourfirst point of contact in the Faculty.

The Faculty of Business has capacity and expertise to supervise research studentsprimarily in the areas of human resource management, organisational behaviour, accounting and finance, financial services, critical and social research in accounting, public administration, public policy, political economy, applied economics, social andeconomic network analysis, international business, strategic management, supplychain management, knowledge management, IT strategies, entrepreneurship andinnovation, marketing, tourism, and cultural, art and heritage industries.
