Finland Student Visa Guide

Finland, known for its stunning natural landscapes, high-quality education system, and innovative society, is a top choice for international students. With universities ranking high in global education standards, Finland is recognised for its research and development, particularly in technology and engineering fields. The country offers a unique blend of modern city life and unspoiled natural beauty, making it an ideal environment for students from all over the world to pursue their higher education.

Finland Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

Students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland will need to apply for a residence permit for studies, often referred to as a student visa in Finland. This process starts once you have secured admission to a Finnish university.

To support your application, you must demonstrate that you have the financial means to cover tuition fees and living expenses. The Finnish Immigration Service requires students to show they have at least €560 per month (or €6,720 per year) at their disposal, which is considered sufficient to cover living expenses in Finland.

The next step involves applying for the residence permit through the Finnish Immigration Service, either online or at your nearest Finnish embassy or consulate, providing the following documents:

  • An official letter of acceptance from the Finnish university confirming your enrollment in a full-time course
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for at least one year
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage for your stay in Finland
  • A valid passport and passport-sized photographs

The fee for the residence permit application for studies is €450 for electronic applications and €520 for paper applications. It is advisable to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Finland, students are required to register their residence and may need to visit the local police or a service point of the Finnish Immigration Service to verify their information if they did not provide biometrics during the application process.

Finland Student Visa Work Regulations

Finland offers international students the chance to work alongside their studies. Students with a valid residence permit for studies are allowed to work for up to 25 hours per week during the term and full-time during holidays, without the need for an additional work permit. This provides a great opportunity for students to gain work experience, improve their language skills, and supplement their income.

After completing their studies, graduates can apply for an extended residence permit to look for work or start a business in Finland. The country provides a supportive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, making it an attractive option for graduates wishing to remain in Finland post-study.
