About Modern British History, MA - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Study

The Modern History academic pathway at UEA aims to provide students with advanced level understanding both of the different approaches to the study of history and specific aspects of the modern history of Britain and Europe since the early 19th century. The MA course provides the opportunity to examine a diverse range of topics, from industrialisation and 'gunboat diplomacy' to the impact of the Great War on British politics and society, to the Second World War and imperial decline.

Structure

This course provides students with the chance to advance their knowledge through a combination of compulsory and optional units. These include research methods and skills, plus a selection of more specialised units structured around the current research trends and activity of modern historians at UEA's School of History. The culmination of the MA course is the dissertation, undertaken in the second half of the degree. This independent study will be completed under the supervision of a School of History adviser.

Teaching

Seminars are led by scholars, so students are guided by specialist teaching staff and supported by a trained archivist in the same discipline. Modern British History at UEA is taught by historians who represent one of the largest concentrations of expertise in this period at a British university. Their specialisms include foreign and imperial policy, economic and social history and gender history; an ideal collaborative research environment.

Employability

The MA programme offers an intensive and practical preparation for those who seek further postgraduate study in this area, but is also designed for those who wish to enter a profession for which knowledge of the historic environment is desirable.

Entry requirements

Open to applicants with a good Honours degree (UK BA (Hons) 2:1 or equivalent) in History or a related subject, or practical experience in this area. Special entry requirements include the submission of a sample of written work on a historical subject accompanying your application. Please visit UEA's website for complete details.
