This Foundation Degree is designed for people working or volunteering with children, young people and families, who are keen to develop a deeper understanding of their work and focuses on the interaction between professional practice, work-based research and current policy within the sector.
Flexible teaching times allow you to fit study alongside work and family commitments. You'll be taught by friendly, supportive staff, experienced in working with adult learners and with substantial professional experience in the sector. Our student support service offers advice and guidance, academic skills support, welcome events and social events throughout your studies.
On successful completion you can progress to either the Child and Family Studies BA or Early Childhood Studies BA top-up degree, depending on the area you want to specialise in.
Our Child and Family Studies Foundation Degree can help you develop in your present employment or access a diverse range of careers, including primary school teaching, social work, youth work and other family services through postgraduate progression routes.
You'll consider theoretical perspectives and approaches along with the key professional and policy developments within the sector. The emphasis on reflective practice will help foster a deeper understanding of your own professional development and the impact on your practice of the professional standards framework. Work experience and continuing engagement with your workplace are key elements of the course.
We know that many mature and part-time students face unique challenges, including balancing academic study with family and employment commitments. For that reason, the Lifelong Learning Centre provides specialist guidance, advice and support to mature and part-time students, from pre-application right through to graduation and beyond.
Flexible study times enable you to choose to attend classes either one afternoon or one evening a week, depending on which fits best with your other commitments.
Depending on your interests, you can choose to progress to either the broad-based Child and Family Studies BA or the more specialist Early Childhood Studies BA

Course content
Throughout the Foundation Degree you will develop an understanding of theoretical perspectives and professional practice in relation to core aspects of your role. This includes study of child development, child and family welfare, safeguarding, multi-agency working, social policy development and management. You will also explore ethical, professional, cultural and global perspectives on your work with children, young people and families.
In year 1 core modules will introduce you to skills, theoretical perspectives and practice, child development and policy development in the sector. In years 2 and 3 your core modules will focus on safeguarding, working together, a work-based professional practice project, mental health, child welfare and life chances. You can also choose optional modules from a range of areas including family support, violently and sexually offending young people, learning and development and counselling.
On successful completion of the Foundation Degree, you can progress onto either the Child and Family Studies BA or Early Childhood Studies top-up degree, which will involve a further two years part-time study.
