About Coastal Engineering, MSc - at University of Plymouth

General programme structureCoastal engineering deals with the defence, protection and management of the world`s coastlines for the social and economic benefit of the communities who own them. The masters programme in coastal engineering is aimed at both graduate scientists and engineers seeking employment or career progression within organisations that work in this field. Participants study the theory of waves, tides, surges and modern techniques in coastal data collection and analysis including GIS and remote sensing. You will be introduced to numerical modelling techniques and obtain hands-on experience of using state-of-the-art software tools. Additionally, you will examine the broader issues of environmental law and the application of current coastal defence guidelines. The programme also equips you with research and engineering project management skills. Experience of the design and planning of coastal works will be obtained through the execution of a feasibility study that places programme material in context. Towards the end of the programme, you will have the opportunity to undertake a substantial research project focused on an aspect of coastal engineering, supervised by academic staff actively researching this exciting field. An optional placement year in industry is available for suitably successful participants.
