This wide-ranging degree will give you an insight into how companies successfully run global operations, while allowing you to become fluent in a major world language.
If you have an A-level in Spanish, you'll be able to develop and refine your language skills while gaining a real understanding of the strategic and operational issues involved in keeping foreign operations both profitable and sustainable. You'll also have the chance to explore Spanish and Latin-American culture, history and politics.
Core modules will build your language skills and introduce you to key concept and theories in international business. But our degrees are so flexible that you can tailor your programme to suit you, choosing from a diverse range of optional modules.
You could study anything from strategic management and the global economy to regional identities in Spain or Latin-American cinema. It's a great way to build a broad base of skills that will really stand out to employers.
Leeds offers great facilities for SPLAS students. The most exciting resources we have are the cultural branches of the governments of Spain and Portugal - the Cervantes and Camões Institutes have branches on campus, as does the cultural arm of the Catalan autonomous government, the Ramon Llull Institute.
The institutes seek to promote language teaching and greater understanding of Spanish-speaking, Lusophone and Catalan cultures around the world. Working with our degree programmes, they host many cultural events and academic activities for our students.
In addition our fully-equipped Language Centre hosts digital language labs, audio/video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Our Interpreter Training Suites also offer you the chance to explore a career in interpreting, and our Electronic Resource Information Centre houses specialised computing facilities to support translation studies.
Accreditation
Our International Business degrees are accredited by the Institute of Export which allows you to acquire an exporting qualification after your studies and strengthens your job prospects in international trade.
Course content
A joint honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each single honours course, but you'll take fewer options and discovery modules so you can fit in both subjects.
In your first year, you'll improve your Spanish language skills and explore the culture and history of Spain and Hispanic America. You'll also be introduced to the key issues and theories in international business, and take one of our Cornerstone modules to help you bring your two subjects together.
From that foundation, you'll progress to topics like the global economy and management while choosing from a range of optional modules on aspects of Spanish and Latin American history, literature, cinema and politics. You'll also work on your language skills to prepare for the following year, when you'll work or study in a Spanish-speaking country.
When you return to Leeds, you'll refine your spoken and written Spanish in advanced language classes. You'll also study strategic management, but an even broader selection of optional modules will allow you to discover transnational corporations, Spanish-English translation, Chicano literature and the African diaspora. You'll apply the critical and research skills you've developed to a dissertation on an international business topic of your choice.

Career opportunities
A Joint Honours degree in International Business and Spanish equips you with a wide range of skills. Not only will you have a broad understanding of how businesses operate worldwide, but you'll be able to communicate in a major world language. All of this will open doors to a wide range of careers, both in the UK and overseas.
However, you will also have valuable skills that are attractive to all kinds of employers. You'll have a high level of commercial awareness and excellent communication and presentation skills. You'll also be confident working in a team and have strong research skills, as well as being able to analyse complex information. Spending a year abroad will demonstrate that you're independent and adaptable, and you'll have organisational skills from managing two different subjects.
Graduates have pursued a wide range of careers in different fields. They include management, business and finance, marketing, education, journalism and the civil service. Others go into language-specific roles such as translating and interpreting, or pursue further training in these areas.

Study abroad and work placements
You'll spend your third year in Spain or another Spanish-speaking country, immersing yourself in local culture and cultivating your language skills.
We have partnerships with a number of universities in Spain and Latin America where you could study, or you could undertake a work placement. You could even work as a language assistant in a school under the British Council's programme.
Whatever you choose to do, you'll gain a new insight into a Spanish-speaking society as well as valuable experience of adapting to another culture. If you choose to work during your time there, you'll also return with work experience to increase your appeal to employers. For many of our students, it's the real highlight of their course.
